  • edge21網友補註:Cane這個英文字原意是甘蔗,也有「用甘蔗作成的手杖」的意思,Cane的內容中不但多次提到美國南方的甘蔗園,甘蔗也是很重要的隱喻。
    其一,甘蔗曾是南方農業經濟的來源之一,而黑奴是當時勞動力的來源,所以甘蔗和棉花一樣,都是美國奴隸制度的殘酷與黑奴的艱辛生活之象徵,而Cane的重點之一就是描繪黑奴制度影響下的美國黑人的生活,所以Cane翻譯成《甘蔗》較能傳達作品原意。
    其二,在作者Toomr的個人筆記與書信中,也多次提到書寫Cane的想法,是想把文本的結構安排成來自甘蔗般的有機體。Cane是由詩歌,短篇故事與戲劇組成的,作者原本的概念是把描寫南方的短篇故事與戲劇放在同一章,取名「甘蔗柄與合聲」,把詩歌集合在同一章,取名「綠葉與蜜糖之歌」,最後把描繪北方城市的短篇小說放在「在華盛頓的簇葉網絡」一章。雖然最後並沒有照上述的原定計畫編排,但出版的Cane仍然帶有一種有機體形式的結構,故譯名以植物名《甘蔗》較適合。
